I have not yet finished this book, but it makes me angry. When Ilana married, she didn't expect her husband to become Hasidic. There are significant differences between Modern Orthodox Jews and Hasids, and the author was raised semi-Conservative/secular. She is progressively forced to abide my her husband's firm orthodoxy- no discussion, no negotiation (there isn't in the Hasidic world) which includes her children's educational choices. She seems happy, but many would have rebelled against this rigid lifestyle without having "bought into" it pre-marriage.Tags : A Tale of Two SOULS: My Hand of GOD Story [Ilana Danneman, Debra Sifen] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. A Tale of Two SOULS My Hand of GOD Story Ilana Danneman Debra Sifen 9780986074912 Books Reviews
As a Christian, I was curious about Orthodox Judaism. Men with forelocks and black hats and coats have been a puzzle to me. Mrs. Danneman not only taught me much about orthodoxy, but also about myself and my own faith journey. I laughed out loud at many of her stories. I could identify with her challenges and her questions as she embraced or made the best of her husband's passion for his heritage. I am thankful to the author for the honest and candid sharing of a very personal part of her life. This has been a real gift to me. I encourage anyone who is trying to live a life of faithfulness with God to dig into this book!
This book was terrific! Not only was it humorous and lighthearted, it was very informative. You don't have to be Jewish or even religious to learn a lot about Orthodoxy. You will find yourself looking forward to each page of the book and sad when it ends.
It shows that being different doesn't mean a marriage or relationship won't work...and work extremely well as Ilana proved in her story. Instead of growing apart, the couple grew together to have an even more special bond, despite the paths they were each on. They had the love of each other and Torah Judaism to guide them!
Loved this book and hope Ilana writes another!
The journey toward spiritual fulfillment is not linear, and neither is this book. It moves back and forth, side to side, up an down, in a seeming swirl of consciousness. Ilana Danneman's struggles with the structure, rigors, and sometimes irrationality of ultra-Orthodox Judaism and Chasidism are revealed with compassion and humor in this short and sweet tale. Her commitment to her husband and family are praiseworthy as are her decisions, at times, to put her foot down. This book is insightful and reveals thoughts that many in her position might have chosen no to share. I only wish that she would have written more and delved deeper into some of the even more unusual aspects of being married to a Chasidic Yid. I look forward to the sequel.
Ilana's ability to be in touch with her emotions & share them with the reader makes this book very special!
The author's conversational style, previously perfected in her blog, make "Two Souls" an easy, quick read.
Who would have thought a book about ultra-orthodox jewry would be a good choice for my beach vacation?
The conflict between orthodoxy and the usual American Jewish lifestyle will make everyone think about issues that have not previously been recognized by the reader....But best of all you're sure to smile, even LOL at the contrasts & conflicts faced by Ilana during her journey to date. Thanks for sharing! Please update us at your earliest convenience.
Ilana Danneman has written an honest, thoughtful, entertaining book about a religious journey that is still evolving. It is a fascinating and enjoyable read. Beneath much of the humor is a wise commentary about what leading a religious life is all about. I highly recommend this book.

I am an "outsider" looking into this unique world. The stories were heart-warming, informative and yet, I felt
the spiritual changes the author has gone through. I am so glad she took the time to share her personal
journey and wish her and her family well. The book should be read by everyone--even "outsiders" )
This book is an easy read and is a must for all who have been on a religous journey. It provides great insight into the lives of Orthodox Jews, which I can imagine would be quite helpful for family members and friends who don't really understand it. It's unusual to find an honest book about Orthodox Judaism, as most seem to have somewhat of an agenda. A Tale of Two SOULS reflects both the beauty, challenges, and humor of living as an Orthodox Jew.
