To those who have given this manga a try and weren't completely satisfied, be sure to keep going. I have read the manga all the way to the end and I have to say it was worth it. Now if you hate the genre and the blood and gore, then I suggest you save your money, because this is definitely not for you.Battle Royale is set in a dystopian society-like Japan, where the government is run like a dictatorship. Among other things, the government has banned rock and roll, the symbolisim of freedom and teenage rebellion. Rock and Roll happens to be our main character Shuuya's passion. And he is now in ninth grade, which is the ripe age in which a whole class of children are randomly picked to be a part of "The Program," where fellow friends and classmates have to kill each other to survive and win.
This book is Rated R for a reason people. When I read it I was definitely under 18, as most other kids my age read material that is older than them. But be warned, this is one of the most horrid manga I have ever read, content wise. *SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT* In it contains gratuitous amounts of gore, nasty language, and the worst of all, a rape scene. *END OF SPOILERS* If you can handle these things, I say pick it up and give it a try. But as a fifteen year old reading this at the time, it was very shocking. These subject matters are taboo in America and would never have been written in America. There is a distinct culture difference between the American and the Japanese, because in Japan these subjects are the "norm" (if you can even call it that) So if you can't handle these subjects, then maybe another book would be better for you.
All in all, this book has some amazing art, including great character designs. Some people might find it a flaw when you can tell bad guys from good guys, but I found it added to the story. As the story progresses, you will find out backstory on ALMOST EVERY ONE of the 42 students in the Program. These character designs let you know ahead of time about which characters will have the most interesting stories. There are stereotypical villain designs (One looks very much like a frog, and one girl looks like a punk thug) but there are also Wolves in sheep's clothing, as you will find out later on.
I would absolutely recommend this book to people who love Horror, Psychological, or Dystopian society books, as well as Manga enthusiests. It is a great series, and a magnificent roller coaster ride of a series. I hope you will stick around to see it truly shine!

Battle Royale Book 1 Koushun Takami Masayuki Taguchi 9781591823148 Books Reviews
violent and sad
While the style comes across less dark than the novel, and the content is often more overtly sexual, this seems like it is headed toward being a good adaptation of the novel. In the part we've seen so far, it seems to be keeping much closer to the book than the movie did. I have high hopes for the rest of the series.
Awesome!
if you have read any other review posted under this magna you know it is a book that you must buy. the only negative thing i have to say about this product is that shipping takes forever because doesnt have enough in stock. took me over two weeks to recieve it. i recommend using B&N for this product since the price is the same, the shipping is much faster and free shipping for ordering $25 or more.
Great series, dark and violent. Better character back story than the movie.
Original
Based on the Japanese novel which was adapted to film by Takeshi Kitano, this story of a high-school class set against one another in a dystopian future that we learn little of has a wide-range of appeal. One volume may contain arousing sexuality, brutal violence, hope, despair, loss, love, betrayal and suspense all rolled into one roller-coaster of a narrative. Gripping, tragic and very explicit, this series is not for the faint of heart. THIS WAS THE ORIGINAL HUNGER GAMES...only better.
