My daughter (13) liked that it was age appropriately graphic. It was an engaging and original fictional plot and a good read for a wide age range. Recommended!
I love this book! And so do my kids... its an imaginative tour de force, well researched and beautifully illustrated. The perfect gift. Also an inspirational tale for children AND adult adventurers of all ages, boys and girls included.
A good romp for kids ranging from preschool to 61 (thus far anyway). I like how he doesn't "dumb down" the vocabulary. I am looking forward to reading to this to our grand-daughter. If you don't know what "caterwauling" means, you will by the end of the book. Nice job!
“Gilly and the Snowcats” is an exhilarating book for adventurers of all ages. Like the “Golden Compass,” “Call of the Wild,” and other classic coming of age tales, “Snowcats” captures the beauty and challenge of a young person finding her way in the world, while taking on one of the greatest races of all time, the Iditarod. You will be holding your breath until the end!
It sounds impossible, immediately- a bunch of house cats and a 12-year old girl taking on the Alaskan wilderness?! How can a little kid possibly attempt THE Iditarod-- an extreme winter dog sled race known for breaking both man and beast?

I love reading "Gilly & the Snow Cats" to my daughter who just turned eight. I can pause from Gilly's outdoor feats of awesomeness to say, "WOW! Can you imagine being able to set up a tent ALL BY YOURSELF? Just think you have FOUR more years to become as [strong | brave | competent | smart] as Gilly!" And my little girl gets really excited for that. Gilly has already become one of our family pillars-- "What would Gilly do?"

While it is a kid's book, full of magic and lore, Bovard doesn't talk down to us. He plays with language, creating images and moments compelling to both adult & tween readers, as well as child listeners who get to ramp up their vocabulary game.

And about that magic? I'm 46 and I still got jazzed when the cats all ________; and the Wendigo's claws______; and then the wolves did that thing, and when the blizzard came, and the old shaman _________... You get the picture! "Gilly & the Snowcats" is a fantastic ride through terrain new to both my girl and me~
