This is the second book by this author that I have read. The first one was a free download, and was the kind of book that I like to read. So I downloaded it and began reading it the same day. Halfway through that book I looked for more by that author and found Homecoming. It wasn't free, but I purchased it anyway. I was not disappointed. It seems when I read a book if I can't put myself into the main character's place it isn't enjoyable to me. I could imagine being Cory in this story, so it made all the things that happened to her seem all the more real. I felt the joys and the heartaches.Wonderful job, Janet Wellington! HOMECOMING a Wisconsin Reunion Romance edition by Janet Wellington Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Very entertaining. Truly enjoyed it. Jake was a successful businessman in the big city, living the life he wanted, content for the most part. It wasn't always so. While growing up, his father was very abusive. As a result, he spent most of his summers with his Aunt Tilly. She truly cared for him and made his life bearable. When he was old enough to get out on his own, he continued to visit her although not as much as he should. So her phone call requesting he help her make some repairs on her house has him promising to make the trip home. However, before he can arrange the time off, Tilly passes away. Guilt ridden for not being there for her, at the request of her attorney, he returns for the reading of her will.
Cory, a nurse, and once Jake's love, is now living in Tilly's house. Apparently, his aunt had hired Cory to help with her care. Now, they're both mentioned in the will but there's a condition. They have to stay in the house together for the next three months while fixing it up.
Cory agrees because she needs the money to find a place to live so she can stay in the small town of Faythe. Jake, because he feels obligated for not being there when his aunt originally asked for help. What follows is the start of a beautiful relationship.
Loved the characters and the way their love story develops. There's one point where Cory agrees to watch her best friend's two children while she's in the hospital and Cory and Jake bond over it. The four of them seem remarkably like a family and they start to think of possibly having a life together. The kids are adorable and it was great to see how Jake really stepped up to the plate and was there for both them and Cory. Their romance was sweet and I enjoyed the interaction between them. It was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. I fully intend to check out more of this author's work.
A beautifully written novel that fulfills the yearning in each of our hearts for that perfect love. This romance has been both written in the stars and in the will of Jake's late Aunt Tillie who, for therapy and for reasons of her own, loved being a matchmaker. She has left both her tumbledown Victorian home and her plethora of cats to her nephew Jake and her caretaker Cory with certain stipulations attached. Ms. Wellington imparts such endearing qualities to her characters that it is impossible not to care for them and their relationship. The intimacy of their love will take your breath away. This tome comes complete with a magical makeover, Cinderella style, for Cory----every woman's dream. And to top that off there is a complete refurbishing of an old Victorian house that would make any do-it-yourselfer feel satisfied. Additionally, there are other situations that occur that leave the reader curious to discover what will happen. So there is a dichotomy here, in that one stage gives you a feeling of fulfillment, while another leaves you hungry for more. Would love to read another in this series. I have read all of Ms. Wellington's previous novels and each is a gem in it's own right. Loved it!
So, there wasn't anything "wrong" with this book, except for the occasional proofreading errors that others have mentioned. It was slow-paced and angsty, but the plot was otherwise the routine second-chance romance. What bothered me though were the seemingly dated plot points and descriptions. It looks like the book was published in 2013 - maybe it was a reissue? First, no one had reliable internet. The her even goes so far as to say that he went to an internet cafe in Chicago to research something one day. Even if he wanted privacy for his task, there hasn't been an operational internet cafe around in 10 years, maybe longer. On that same note, the deceased aunt sent him a letter that he never received, because he was working in London for two months. Mind you, she knew his residence and place of employment, but she didn't call there to inquire about him (and apparently neither did the town lawyer, who claimed he couldn't find him to notify him of her death!!???). No, she had no phone, but she wasn't a recluse, and I'm sure she knew plenty of people who did. She sent a handwritten letter about an important topic and did no follow-up when he didn't respond in a timely manner. Never mind that nobody goes away for two months without making provisions for his mail. Then, the way they talked about his learning disability, like it was some foreign, unknown, shameful thing. Even if this guy was 20 years out of high school, it was still an established thing in 1996, and these days it's an accommodated disability, so that rang sort of old-fashioned. Finally, her gown for the benefit dinner. From the description, it sounded like something I would have worn to prom in 1990. So, I expected to see that the book was older than it is. The characters were OK, and the plot was fine, but these odd points detracted for me.
I loved this book...I could not put it down. I started it on my lunch break and ended up finishing it as soon as I got home! Highly recommend!!
This is a touching store of Cory and Jake, old friends/high school sweethearts who have not seen each other since graduation.
They are reunited by Aunt Tillie's death and the renovation of her Victorian house, which requires them to live there for 3 months in order to split the profits.
During the renovation they are forced to revisit their pasts and try to come to terms with what has happened and see if their hearts are ready for each other.
